MIT Department of Architecture Summer Teaching Workshop in: Global Environmental History

The MIT Department of Architecture is welcoming applications for its second Summer Teaching Workshop, hosted by the History, Theory, and Criticism of Architecture and Art Group.

This intimate four-day intensive Workshop will give early- and mid-career instructors teaching architectural history at the undergraduate level the opportunity to collaboratively discuss and develop materials and methods for survey and introductory courses. The goal is to create space and time for intimate dialogue about pedagogy, and to allow early- and mid-career teacher-scholars to learn from one another and reimagine the syllabus and other course materials

The theme of this year’s Workshop is Global Environmental History. We understand by the concept of “global environmental history” something quite broad that resides in the triangulated space of nature, humans, and society.

The Workshop will provide a stipend to reimburse travel and accommodations in Cambridge MA during the duration of the Workshop (varies based on distance travelled). Additionally, participants will receive a $500 honorarium and two MIT-funded group dinners.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this Workshop, you must:

  • Be a PhD-holding early- or mid-career scholar in a teaching position (pre-tenure or non-tenure-track)
  • Have taught or are currently teaching an undergraduate course, preferably at the introductory or survey level
  • Have developed or are developing a course in architectural history, broadly defined, that is aligned with the Workshop theme.

Research in the architectural humanities rarely moves in a straight line. It develops through fragments of observation, incomplete archives, tentative sketches, unexpected encounters, and reflections that may never make their way into a finished thesis or publication. This symposium, En Chantiers: Field Notes in Progress, foregrounds the provisional and the unfinished as productive spaces of inquiry. By placing emphasis on field notes; broadly understood as the marks, traces, and records of ongoing research, this symposium invites doctoral students to reflect on how knowledge is gathered, tested, and re-shaped in practice. Participants are encouraged to share snapshots and assemblages of their current work: questions that remain unresolved, methods under construction, and the contingent moments that shape the research journey. We are particularly interested in contributions that examine how incompleteness, instability, or ambiguity can be mobilised as critical tools within architectural humanities research.

The call for abstract is now open and closes by 15 March 2026.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS, JOELHO 18, “Ground Floor”

CALL FOR PAPERS: AFRAUHN NAIROBI

Conference Dates: 8 – 10 September 2026

Conference run by the African Architectural & Urban History Network (AFRAUHN) in collaboration with the Department of Architecture, University of Nairobi, Kenya.

Conference Rationale

The African Architectural and Urban History Network (AFRAUHN), in collaboration with the Department of Architecture at the University of Nairobi, invites proposals for papers about emerging discourses and themes in African architectural and urban practices for a major international conference being held at the University of Nairobi from 8th September – 10th September 2026.

It will be the second AFRAUHN bi-annual conference, the first having taken place at the Wits School of Architecture and Planning in South Africa in July 2024. Recognizing that discourses about African architecture and urban planning are more complex than the bifurcated ‘traditional’/‘colonial’ or ‘African’/‘Western’ models which still tend to dominate the research, writing, environmental design and spatial design practices in the continent, this conference instead welcomes contributions that critically examine the status quo(s) of these models and disciplines – be that in terms of academic, practice, national institutions or regulatory bodies, or as are imagined by policy-makers in forms of urban development which are then disseminated to the public.

This second AFRAUHN bi-annual conference is organized to coincide with the inaugural Pan-African Biennale of Architecture, curated by Omar Degan and team, and which is also being held in September 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya.
